Between 14 and 17 August, Reddit lost 86 per cent of its citations in ChatGPT Search.<\/span><\/p>\n

From 3.83 percent of all sources to 0.52 percent on average. Four days. Measured by Promptwatch, which monitors millions of live AI answers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nobody at Reddit had changed anything. The content was still there. The threads, the reviews, the honest stories of people about their employer: all untouched.<\/span><\/p>\n

ChatGPT only adjusted how it searches for its sources. One technical change on OpenAI's side, and one of the biggest voices on work almost disappeared from the answer candidates are shown.<\/span><\/p>\n

That is the lesson I want to impart to employers.<\/span><\/p>\n

What the model says is what the candidate hears<\/h3>\n

Candidates no longer ask their questions to Google. They ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot. And it rarely stops at a single question. A candidate holds a conversation: 4, 5, sometimes 12 questions in a row, using their own situation as context. The model remembers what they asked previously and builds on that.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the end of that conversation lies an answer. And that answer is nowadays the final stop.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pew found that in the United States, when a search includes an AI summary, users still click through to a real site in only 8 percent of cases. Without that summary, it is 15 percent. Of the people, 1 percent click on the sources beneath the summary.<\/span><\/p>\n

So what the model says is what the candidate hears. The rest does not reach them.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is quoted exists. What is omitted does not.<\/h3>\n

What the model quotes, exists for the candidate. What it summarises, becomes their view of you. And what it leaves out, does not exist.<\/span><\/p>\n

This counts for more with an employer than with an online shop. A candidate asking where they will spend their coming years is more likely to believe the answer than an advertisement. It feels like advice from an acquaintance. Exactly that trust makes your presence in that answer, or your absence, so decisive.<\/span><\/p>\n

Building on land you do not own<\/h3>\n

Many employers build their reputation on ground they do not own. A Glassdoor page. A Reddit thread where someone happens to say something nice. An old interview on someone else's site.<\/span><\/p>\n

That works, precisely as long as those places are cited. The Reddit week shows how quickly that can turn around. A source that carried your story for months can be practically gone from the answer in a single weekend.<\/span><\/p>\n

What actually happened<\/h3>\n

Promptwatch observed that on 8 August ChatGPT changed its method of retrieving sources, the so-called query fan-out. The data shows when the shift happened, not why. And that is precisely the uncomfortable part: the reason lies with OpenAI, not with you.<\/span><\/p>\n

Something else is going on beneath the surface. Press Ranger and OtterlyAI analysed 129 million citations across seven AI platforms. Publishers with a licensing deal with OpenAI received 48 percent more citations in ChatGPT than publishers without such a deal. Five media companies together capture 69 percent of all citations to those licensed publishers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Read that the way an employer ought to read it. Which voices a language model allows to have a say on work is partly decided in boardrooms where you are not at the table.<\/span><\/p>\n

Major consumer brands have the advantage here. A model knows Coolblue, knows ASML, knows bol. For a language model, most employers are a blank slate until they give the model something to read themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n

You won't get inside that boardroom. What you do have in your hands: becoming a source yourself that is sturdy enough to remain standing while the positions around it shift.<\/span><\/p>\n

That starts with one clear story about who you are as an employer. On your own channels. In language that a model can adopt without having to guess what you mean.<\/span><\/p>\n

In concrete terms, that means: write your story the way a candidate asks it, with real answers about career progression, culture and the type of work people do with you. Say it consistently everywhere. Ensure the facts are correct and that a language model can easily extract them from your page and quote them.<\/span><\/p>\n

What you publish yourself stands firm. What others write about you blows with the wind. And what you outsource to an external platform can be gone in four days.<\/span><\/p>\n

Measuring is the minimum<\/h3>\n

You will have to keep measuring it. The Reddit week came without an announcement and without prior warning. Anyone who checks their visibility in language models once a year is looking at a photograph of something that changes shape every month. Monthly measurement is the minimum, and per platform, because ChatGPT, Gemini and Google each fetch their own sources.<\/span><\/p>\n

I know the reflex to wait. \u201cIt won't come to that.\u201d I hear that phrase often. And it's true, right up until the moment it isn't.<\/span><\/p>\n

Four days. That is how quickly a candidate's perception of you can flip. Without anyone calling to let you know.<\/span><\/p>\n

What AI says about you today, and the source that answer is based on: that is the metric that matters right now.<\/span><\/p>\n
