Generative Engine Optimization, clearly explained. Become visible in the answers of ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Microsoft Copilot.
“Which employer in my sector has the best culture?”
In the past, someone would type this into Google and click through ten blue links to build their own picture. Now, that same person asks the question to ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini and gets one single answer back within seconds.
The question is: is your organisation in that answer, or not?
This FAQ explains what GEO is, why it is needed alongside SEO, and how to become visible in the answers provided by AI systems.
THE BASICS
What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
GEO is the strategic optimisation of your content so that AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews mention and cite you in their answers. Not in a list of search results, but in the direct answer generated by the model.
Where SEO aims for a high position in Google, GEO aims for presence in the answer itself.
The goal is not to rank, but to be cited.
What is the difference between GEO and SEO?
SEO optimises for search engines that show a list of links. GEO optimises for AI systems that provide a single synthesized answer. With SEO you win by ranking, with GEO you win by being cited.
SEO is about clicks to your site. GEO is about whether your information ends up in the answer, even if no click follows. The two reinforce each other, but they play a different game with different rules.

Why do I need GEO alongside my existing SEO?
Because more and more people are asking their question to an AI instead of a search engine. Your SEO can be perfect and you can still be invisible in AI answers, because LLMs select content differently than Google.
GEO doesn't replace SEO. It's the layer that protects your visibility at the moment search behaviour shifts to AI.
What does the shift from search results to AI answers mean for my organisation?
The first impression someone gets of you is increasingly formed by an AI rather than your own website. A candidate, client or journalist asks the model, and the model answers based on what it finds out about you.
If that image is incorrect, or if you are missing from the answer, you miss the first impression. And a first impression is rarely corrected.
HOW AI USES YOUR CONTENT
How do AI systems and LLMs use my content?
LLMs ingest your content in two ways. During training, they absorb vast amounts of web text, making your brand part of the model. During a conversation, they retrieve current sources via a search-and-retrieval step, read them, and summarise them in their answer.
In both cases the same law applies: only content that is clear, structured and accessible will end up in the answer.
What is RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation)?
RAG is the technique whereby an AI system first retrieves relevant sources from the web or from a database, and then generates an answer based on those sources. ChatGPT with search functionality, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews work in this way.
This is crucial for GEO. If your page isn't retrieved in the retrieval step, the model simply cannot cite you, no matter how good your content is.
For which AI platforms does GEO optimise?
GEO focuses on the systems where people ask their questions: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Microsoft Copilot. Each platform retrieves content slightly differently and weighs sources differently.
That is why GEO is not a one-size-fits-all. Being visible in Perplexity does not automatically mean being visible in ChatGPT.
What makes content citeable for AI?
Citable content gives a direct answer, is factually verifiable, and is attributed to a recognisable source. Specifically: a clear question-and-answer structure, independent paragraphs that also make sense away from the page, figures and sources, and a clear author or organisation behind it.
AI systems quote what they can easily summarise and trust. They do not pick up vague marketing jargon.

GEO IN PRACTICE
What is the GEO approach of AI Rebels?
We work along three pillars that together drive your AI visibility. One: technology, so that AI crawlers are allowed to and can read your content. Two: content, so that what they read is quotable and reliable. Three: authority, so that external sources confirm the image that you portray of yourself.
We measure where you currently stand, prioritise by impact, and keep building until you appear in the answers. No ad-hoc tips, but a measurable trajectory.
| Pillar | What we do | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | crawler access, structured data, discoverability | Without access, no AI reads you |
| Content | Citable, reliable answers | Determines whether you get in the answer |
| Authority | External sources and mentions | AI trusts what others say about you |
How do you measure GEO results and which KPIs are associated with them?
The core question is: are you mentioned, and is what is said about you correct? Underneath that are concrete KPIs: how often your brand appears in AI answers (share of voice), which prompts you are or aren't mentioned on, whether you are cited as a source, the sentiment and accuracy of what AI says about you, and which AI crawlers visit your site.
We monitor this continuously with a fixed set of prompts, so that you see shifts instead of guessing.
How long does it take for GEO to yield results?
Technical improvements, such as crawler access and structured data, often take effect within weeks. Content and authority building takes more time, because AI systems only shift when there is enough signal.
Expect the first visible movement within 1 to 3 months, and a structural position from 6 months. GEO is not a campaign with an end date, but a position that you maintain.
Who is GEO relevant to?
For every organisation where their online image matters: employers looking for talent, brands convincing customers, service providers chosen for their expertise. AI Rebels specialises in employer branding, or how to be visible and accurately represented
when candidates use AI to research employers.
The principle applies more broadly than recruitment, but the pain is most acutely felt there right now.
Can I do GEO myself, or do I need an agency?
You can lay the foundations yourself: make sure AI crawlers are allowed to read your site, write citable content, and keep an eye on your mentions. The difference lies in measuring and persevering.
Without continuous monitoring, you don't know whether you're making progress. And without experience of how different platforms weigh sources, you're optimising in the wild. That's where we come in.
OVER AI REBELS
Why choose AI Rebels as a GEO agency?
Because we build GEO, not just talk about it. AI Rebels is the first Dutch agency that focuses entirely on Generative Engine Optimization, with a background in recruitment and employer branding.
We work for organisations like ProRail, DHL Supply Chain and Milence. No one-off advice, but a measurable trajectory: from audit to visibility in the answers your candidates and customers read.
