OpenAI is selling ad space in ChatGPT. Google is labelling AI in ads. This is what it means for your visibility as an employer.
“Which employer would be a good fit for someone like me?”
Kim asks ChatGPT that question and receives advice. And since February 9, 2026, there's sometimes something underneath in the US: a clearly labelled, sponsored block.
The advertising era in AI has begun. The question is: will you be in the answer, or in the box below it?
THE SHIFT
OpenAI is now selling ad space under its answers
On 16 January 2026, OpenAI announced that it would be trialling adverts in ChatGPT. On 9 February, the pilot went live in the US for users of the free subscription and ChatGPT Go ($8 per month). Paid subscriptions such as Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise remain
ad-free.
The setup is deliberately cautious. Advertisements are clearly labelled, are separate from the answers, and according to OpenAI, do not change what ChatGPT says.
Since then, things have accelerated. In May, OpenAI launched a self-serve Ads Manager with no minimum spend; any entrepreneur with a credit card can now advertise within ChatGPT. On May 7th, OpenAI announced an expansion of the pilot to the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea. Best Buy, Lowe’s and VistaPrint are listed as the first advertisers on ads.openai.com.
The targeting works differently than you're used to from Google Ads. ChatGPT uses the context of the conversation rather than keywords. Someone comparing options and preparing a decision shares more context than a search bar ever could.
THE OTHER SIDE
Google labels AI in adverts
Google is moving from the other side. On 9 July 2026, Google introduced a “How this ad was made” panel within My Ad Centre, visible across Search, YouTube and Discover. That panel shows whether an ad was generated or edited using generative AI.
If an advertiser creates the ad using Google's own AI tools, Google will automatically add the label. For ads created elsewhere, there will be a control that allows the advertiser to indicate their own AI usage. Under the hood, there's SynthID: an invisible watermark in everything that Google's generative tools produce.
Two movements, same direction. Advertisements and AI are growing towards each other, and both platforms are drawing the same line: what is sponsored will be labelled. What AI has made will be labelled.
‘Ads in AI’ refers to advertisements that are integrated into or generated by artificial intelligence systems. This can manifest in several ways: * **AI-Powered Ad Targeting:** AI algorithms are used to analyse vast amounts of user data (browsing history, search queries, social media activity, demographics, etc.) to predict user interests and behaviours. This allows advertisers to show highly personalised ads to specific individuals or groups, making them more likely to be relevant and effective. * **AI-Generated Ad Content:** AI is increasingly used to create the actual content of advertisements. This could include: * **Text Generation:** AI can write ad copy, headlines, and descriptions. * **Image and Video Generation:** AI can create visuals, illustrations, and even short video clips for ads, often tailored to specific audiences or platforms. * **Personalised Ad Creatives:** AI can dynamically adjust ad elements (images, text, calls to action) in real-time based on the individual user viewing the ad. * **AI in Ad Platforms:** AI is integral to the functioning of advertising platforms (like Google Ads, Meta Ads). It manages ad auctions, optimises bidding strategies, detects fraudulent clicks, and provides performance analytics. * **Advertising within AI Interfaces:** As AI interfaces become more common (e.g., chatbots, virtual assistants), there's a potential for advertising to be directly embedded within these interactions. For example, a virtual assistant *might* recommend a product or service, and if this recommendation is influenced by an advertiser, it could be considered an "ad in AI." In essence, "Ads in AI" encompasses the use of artificial intelligence to make advertising more efficient, personalised, and creative, as well as the potential for advertising to appear directly within AI-driven environments.
Ads in AI is the collective term for two developments that will converge in 2026: advertisements appearing within AI assistants such as ChatGPT, and generative AI creating advertisements on platforms like Google. In both cases, the same rule applies: sponsored and AI-generated content will receive a visible label.
THE BORDER
The answer itself remains unsellable
This is where it gets interesting for employers.
OpenAI is explicit about it: advertisements are separate from the answer and do not influence the content. The advice ChatGPT gives when Kim asks which employer suits her comes from organic sources. From your website. From reviews. From everything language models have learned about you.
That organic answer can't be bought; visibility is earned. And that's precisely what GEO is.
|
Aspect |
Advertisements in AI |
GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Position | Labeled block below the answer | In the answer itself |
| Mechanism | Budget per klik of vertoning | Citable content, authority, technique |
| Trust | The reader sees you pay | The language model names you as the source |
| Shelf-life | Stop once the budget stops | Keep building as long as your resources exist |
Advertisements in AI and GEO **|** do different jobs. An advertisement buys a moment of attention. GEO determines whether you feature in the advice itself. For a candidate choosing an employer, that advice carries more weight than the box below it.
THE NUMBERS
The facts laid out
– 9 February 2026: Launch of ad pilot in ChatGPT, US, Free, and Go subscriptions (OpenAI Help Center)
– May 2026: Self-serve Ads Manager live, with no minimum spend (OpenAI)
– 7 May 2026: expansion announced to the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea (OpenAI)
– 9 July 2026: Google introduces AI transparency labels for ads on Search, YouTube and Discover (Google Ads Blog)
Three questions to ask today:
– What does ChatGPT reply when asked: “Is [your organisation] a good employer?”
– Are you in that answer, or only in the sponsored block below it?
– Does the image that AI paints of you accurately reflect who you really are?
What now?
First the answer, then the advertisement
Advertising in ChatGPT will also become a realistic option for European markets in the coming months. An excellent tool for reach. But an advertisement next to an answer in which you yourself are missing is an expensive plaster for invisibility.
Therefore, start with the organic answer. Know what LLMs are saying about you today. Fix what's missing. And only then, when the foundation is in place, should you introduce ads as a supplement.
Candidates are asking AI. What are LLMs saying about you today?
